phpBB Tutorial

phpBB Manual Installation

If you want to perform a phpBB installation for your web site manually, follow the instructions below.

However, if you have already completed the automated installation, skip this step.

phpBB manual installation includes uploading the installation package via cPanel's File Manager or using an FTP client. You can find the latest phpBB release on their official website.

Note that the uploaded package should reside under the public_html folder, that is the web root folder for your account or as an alternative under a sub-directory for it.

Besides, a new database should be created before performing the installation. It will be easy to do this by following the MySQL Tutorial.

Next, access the directory at which you have uploaded the phpBB3 installation package. It will only be accessible via your domain name if you have uploaded it directly under the public_html folder. It will be accessible via an URL of type http://yourdomainname.com/forumphpbb if you have used a sub-directory, for example "phpbb3". You will see the following page if everything is done right:

You are free to check the General Public License and the support reference page as well. They might be useful in the future. Next, click on the tab Install.

You can safely click the button Proceed to next step as all requirements are met on TMDHosting servers.

Installation compatibility is on the next page. You should pass this step with no troubles again. As you can see, few of the supported databases are not available on our servers. But this is not an issue. You just need a single type of the supported databases to be available in order to proceed with the installation. There should be the button Start Install at the bottom of the page.

Important

If else the requirement that is not met will be in red color and there will be displayed the instructions for correcting the issue.

The Database configuration is the next step. Here for the new database you should enter the earlier created database details.

Database type is the first option. As usual you should leave it as MySQL.

Set the Database server hostname or DSN as: localhost.

You can leave the option Database server port blank or you can enter 3306. As our MySQL server works on a standard port, they both will work with no troubles.

You should use the previously created name as the Database name.

The Database username should also be the previously created one.

Set the option Database password as the one you previously set.

Lastly, as the option Prefix for tables is auto generated it can be left.

If you are not installing several scripts in the same database, it is not essential. Note that both options the Database name and Database username will include your cPanel username as prefix. If you fill options correctly, the page will look like that:

Now, click on the button Proceed to next step. You will see a successful connection confirmation if you have properly entered the details.

You can click on the button Proceed to next step. For the newly installed board you can enter the desired administrative details on the Administrator details page.

You should verify them and click on the button Proceed to next step again. You will get a message Tests passed if there are not any errors and you should again click on the button Proceed to next step and once again after the configuration is saved.

The next page is that with the Advanced settings.

Generally, there are not any changes you should make on this page. You can leave all settings unchanged as they are automatically generated. Next, click on the button Proceed to next step again. A confirmation will be displayed which confirms that you have successfully populated the database with data and then you should click on the button Proceed to next step for the last time.

You will get to the page Installation Successful.

You have two options at this point. The first option is to carry out the data converting from an old phpBB2 installation to the newly installed phpBB3. The second option is to go directly to your newly installed forum. Bare in mind that before using your board, you should delete, move or rename the install directory.

You can only access the Administration Control Panel (ACP) if this directory is still present. With this the phpBB3 manual installation is finalized. You should see a screen similar to this one:

Continue with: phpBB Administration
